The palace was designed by Italian architect Rafaelle Caritto. Sissi was a known philhellene who admired to a great extent Greece and its culture. So, inspiration was drawn from Greek mythology. Ernst Herter, a famous German sculptor, was commissioned to create works of art that paid homage to Achilles, who the palace took its name after. His sculpture Dying Achilles is the centerpiece of the estate's gardens. After Sissi's death, Achillion was purchased by German Kaiser Wilhelm II to be used as a summer residence. After World War I, it became the property of the Greek state. After 20 years of leasing as a casino (1962-1983), the palace returned to the Hellenic Tourism Organization and now operates as a museum. Paghi, Corfu
Paghi, a traditional village 29km from Corfu Town, is a taste of real Corfu. It is set on the northern slopes of Mount Istoni at an altitude of 170m, overlooking the entire area. Its name derives from the Ancient Greek word “pax”, meaning “rocky hill”, due to the location’s morphology. Untouched by the massive tourist flows, Paghi has managed to retain its authenticity and gives a glimpse of how the island’s life used to be in the past. A walk in the village reveals beautiful, cobbled alleys, gates with coats of arms dating from the 18th century, scenic churches, old mansions, and flowered courtyards. Stroll around the narrow streets and take in local colors. The village’s people will greet you with a big smile. When you get tired from walking, take a stop at the old-fashioned coffee shops in the center for some refreshment and bask in the ambiance. For movie fans, a scene from the James Bond film “For your eyes only” with Roger Moore was shot at a crossroads in the center of the village. The winding roads of Paghi were also used for the famous car chase scene. Right before the entrance of the village, you will come upon an impressive waterfall. A rock, called Ortholithos, has a hole in it, from which the water falls in the gorge below. Nearby Beaches Agios Georgios, also called Agios Georgios North or Agios Georgios Paghon (due to its proximity to the nearby village of Paghi) to be differentiated from the namesake Agios Georgios South beach, is an attractive seaside resort on the mouth of a lush valley on the northwest side of Corfu. It lies some 30km from Corfu Town. Agios Georgios is a Blue Flag awarded beach and, unquestionably, one of the island’s most beautiful. Located along the horseshoe-shaped Agios Georgios Bay, it stretches for kilometers. Its turquoise waters and golden sand, combined with its quietness, make it a preferred destination for families and people who seek a relaxed, tranquil holiday. All modern amenities are present, and there are umbrellas and sunbeds for rent. However, besides sunbathing and swimming, there are all sorts of fun water-based activities: scuba diving (lessons can be arranged), jet ski, windsurf, water ski, SUP, and much more. You can also rent a boat and visit the nearby Porto Timoni or the Diapontia Islands. Arillas Arillas is a renowned coastal settlement to the north of Agios Georgios, with a fantastic beach that attracts many domestic and foreign visitors during the summer months. The beach is sandy, and it has crystal clear shallow waters. Therefore, it is a popular destination for families with small children. Its westward orientation offers unforgettable nightfalls, with the sun diving into the Ionian Sea behind the desolate islands of Sykia, Gynaika, and Gravia (which are just opposite to the beach). Arillas is a fully organized resort, with many restaurants along the coast serving different cuisine types. There is also another version of a mythological nature: it was Amphion, Ivi’s brother, that the settlement was named after. Makrades
Makrades is a historic village on the northwest side of Corfu, 25km from Corfu Town. It is situated at the top of a lush hill, surrounded by perennial olive groves. The village was established in the 13th century. Tradition has it that the craftsmen who built the famous nearby Byzantine fortress of Angelokastro were the first inhabitants of Makrades. Like many other mountainous Corfiot villages, Makrades is set on the side of the hilltop that is “invisible” from the sea for protection from pirate raids back in the day. Makrades has a distinctive architecture with beautiful stone houses, for which the rocks formations of the area were used as a building material. A walk around the village’s paved alleys will enchant you. Admire the old church and end up at the square, where you will see the locals enjoy their coffee and chat under the shade of a big plane tree. As Makrades does not rely heavily on tourism, the main occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture. On the shelves of the few souvenir shops, you will find a variety of local products, such as extra virgin olive oil and olives, utensils and ornaments made out of olive wood, honey, jams, local wines, and traditional embroideries, like cushions and carpets.
