Lefkimmi

Περιγραφή

Lefkimmi is the second-largest settlement of Corfu, located 40km south of Corfu Town. Lying at the southern tip of the island, it is the center of activities for this area. Modern-day Lefkimmi has essentially resulted from the unification of five villages (Riglades, Anaplades, Agioi Theodoroi, Melikia, and Potami) and consists of three neighborhoods: Ano (Upper) Lefkimmi, Lefkimmi (or Potami), and Melikia.

Lefkimmi is set in a fertile plain full of olive trees and vineyards. To a large extent, it has remained untouched by mass tourism, so it retains its traditional identity and allure. It gives a feeling of a past era, and it is not uncommon to see women balancing pots on their heads and men carrying goods on their donkeys in the streets.

A stroll through the narrow paved streets of Lefkimmi will amaze you with the old merchants’ mansions and cottages, the Venetian-style buildings, the small squares, and the elaborate churches all over town. Lefkimmi is also called Potami (river), as a river that flows into the nearby Bouka beach runs through it. The paved piers are lined with bakeries, restaurants, tavernas, and coffee shops. The cuisine served here is purely traditional, so you can rest assured you will be treated with a genuine Corfiot welcome. The wooden boats of local fishermen moored along the banks create a very picturesque sight.

Lefkimmi is a port town. Corfu’s second port of operation connects Lefkimmi to Igoumenitsa on the opposite mainland coast. The journey lasts just 1 hour, and it is the most affordable way to reach Corfu.

The town is also a religious attraction. The monastery of Kyra ton Aggelon (“Lady of the Angels”), built in 1696, is a necessary stop for pilgrims. The Church of Agios Isavros in Melikia contains beautiful frescoes and icons from the 16th century. Agios Arsenios is famous for the remains of the homonymous saint, kept in a silver shrine.

Lefkimmi is also the place where a brave rescue operation took place in World War II. When a Lancaster bomber crashed in the area, locals rescued the crew, sheltered them, and led them to Kontokali, under the nose of the German occupation forces, where a British submarine took them to safety.

Things to do and see in the area of Lefkimmi, Corfu

The magical wetland of Alikes (salt marshes)

Alikes is a former industrial site that turned into a precious ecosystem hosting many flora and avifauna species.

The 500-acre area used to be the largest salt mines operating on the island. The production of salt started in the 14th century and continued until 1988. During the Venetian rule, two warehouses were built for the storage of salt. Nowadays, the warehouses have been fully restored and constitute an essential landmark on the site. If you take a walk around the salt marshes, you will notice the remnants of the exploitation, such as the ditches and corridors of the pans and some wagons used to transport the salt.

Today, Alikes is a paradise for nature worshippers and hikers. The incredibly biodiverse wetland, protected by the Natura 200 network, includes many plants like orchids and tamarisks, while it is a significant supply area for flamingos, egrets, and other migratory birds. The birds use Alikes as a stopover on their journey.
