Things to do in Gastouri

You can’t spend time in Gastouri without visiting the amazing Achilleion Palace at least once. Built in 1890 for Empress Elisabeth of Austria (also known as Empress Sisi), it was designed by Italian architect Raffaele Caritto and features several fabulous sculptures by German master Ernst Herter. The opulent interiors are complemented by stunning formal gardens where you can stroll around at your leisure and take in the panoramic views.

Gastouri is also a great base for excursions and the trip a few kilometres north to Mouse Island is particularly pleasurable. Known as Pontikonisi to locals, this iconic rocky islet is crowned by a lovely 11^th Century Byzantine church surrounded by lush vegetation and it’s one of Corfu’s most scenic spots.

A day trip to Paxos, Antipaxos and the Blue Caves is also within easy reach. Paxos is a nature lover’s paradise, the beaches of Antipaxos are legendary and the Blue Caves, surrounded by the iridescent Ionian sea, are out of this world. These caverns played an important part in Greek mythology and the cave at Ahai is said to have once hosted Poseidon’s marble palace.
