Properties for Sale in Karousades
For many in the know, Corfu’s north coast is the most aesthetically pleasing part of the island ̶ its luscious green hillsides, beautiful beaches, fabulous forests and vibrant villages cast a spell which is truly captivating.
Renowned resorts trip off the tongue here ̶ think Agios Georgios, Agios Spyridon, Almyros and Thinalio.
But don’t overlook Karousades, nestled in the northwest of the island in the lush outskirts of Sidari, some 40km from Corfu Town. This attractive village on the road to Roda is notable for its terrific traditional architecture ̶ its pastel coloured, terracotta tiled houses and tavernas are embellished with vines and floral decorations which endow them with a romantic, ramshackle charm.
You’ll find the renovated Theotokis mansion here (more of which later) and plenty of quality bars, restaurants and shops, the surrounding pine and cypress forests are perfect for cathartic tree bathing and sublime beaches are just a stone’s throw away.
It’s easy to fall in love with this village and there’s usually a fine selection of diverse properties here just waiting to be discovered.
Things to do in Karousades
The Theotokis Mansion isn’t open to the public, but you can see it from the roadside and it’s a place of pilgrimage for anyone interested in writer and political firebrand Konstantinos Theotokis. This famous realist novelist was part of an aristocratic family which originally sought sanctuary in Corfu after the fall of Constantinople in 1453 and the unfiltered demotic Greek of his writing is enhanced by Corfiot flourishes. After taking part in the Cretan insurrection against Turkish forces in 1897 he converted to Socialism and this political and philosophical awakening inspired his masterpiece novel Slaves in Their Chains (1922) which details power struggles between competing social groups during a period of tumultuous social change in Corfu.
Astrakeri beach is also near Karousades and its sweeping, spacious sandy shore is ideal for sunbathing, while the shallow crystal-clear waters are perfect for families with young children or adults who want to splash around without any strenuous swimming. There’s a water sports centre if you’re yearning for livelier activities and numerous tavernas where you can cool off in the shade and sip a refreshing drink as you watch the sun sparkle across the azure sea.
If you’re looking for a holiday home or a permanent residence in a traditional village set in stunning scenery, where it’s easy to tap into the attractions of busier tourist towns whenever the mood takes you, Karousades could be ideal.
