South Corfu offers something for every type of adventurer who chooses to settle here.
The bright lights, bars and night clubs of Kavos are buzzing with boisterous attractions for bon vivants, but this is balanced beautifully by rustic rural villages waiting to be discovered in rolling green hills and easy access to the pristine waters of the east coast and rugged weather-sculpted beaches of the west.
Desirable residential areas in this unspoiled and somewhat underrated part of Corfu include pretty fishing village Petriti, the bustling port town of Lefkimmi with its surrounding vineyards and excellent connections to surrounding islands, and charming Chalikounas, located next to Lake Korission.
However, for the discerning purchaser, Messonghi might be the pick of the bunch in the sublime south. This petite, peaceful and perfectly formed resort is 1km from neighbouring Moraitka and most of its amenities are clustered around the beach. The terrain is relatively flat and easy to navigate on foot or otherwise, olive groves occupy every spare parcel of land and there are ample restaurants, shops and traditional tavernas to satisfy diverse tastes.
The superb sandy beach in Messonghi affords awesome views of the Greek mainland to the east and Albania to the north, while the gradual gradient of the water makes it manageable for families with young children.
If you want a bird’s eye view of the surroundings you can arrange a paragliding session at the Hotel Christina, but if you prefer messing around on the water, there are banana boats, ringos and pedal boats aplenty.
Alternatively, if you’d rather keep your feet on solid ground and are reasonably fit, trek around 4km up the hillside to the traditional Corfiot village of Chlomos, where you’re rewarded for your efforts by panoramic views of the south coast and the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos.
Meanwhile, nature lovers will be in seventh heaven at the aforementioned Lake Korission, an edenic saltwater lagoon where terrapins lounge in the water and kingfishers and egrets rustle in the surrounding reeds before launching skywards in explosions of kaleidoscopic colour. The remains of a Byzantian fortress are also close to the lake and they’re remarkably well preserved.
As you can see, Messonghi has a marvellous mix of exciting activities and natural attractions, so purchasing a property here might be an excellent decision.
At Messonghi you can find everything from compact apartments suitable for singles, couples or small families, to detached properties that are perfect for larger families or which can even be repurposed for commercial use.
But one of the main benefits of buying in Messonghi is that it’s reasonably undeveloped, therefore there are plenty of land parcels up for grabs here where you could build an expansive villa overlooking the ocean, or even an apartment complex nestled in the surrounding sylvan glades.
