West/north west Corfu has the myths and legends of the ancient world tattooed across its topographical features ̶ for example, from the hills above several of the resorts you can gaze across the bay at the islets of Sikia, Gineka and Kravia, said to be the petrified remains of the ship of Odysseus.
Palaiokastritsa is a resort on this side of the island that punches above its weight when it comes to promising property listings, and it also played its part in the legend of Odysseus, as this is purportedly the place where the shipwrecked hero met Nausicaa for the first time, who carried him to the court of her father King Alcinous to recount his adventures to a royal audience.
The monastery here dates from 1225 and incorporates an interesting museum, but not all the attractions are of the ancient variety ̶ there are several shops, bars and supermarkets where (you’ll be glad to know!) the offerings are bang up to date.
Known as ‘the Capri of the Ionian Sea’, this is a superb spot to settle down and spend time with friends and family ̶ read on for more information on its facilities, amenities and activities.
Agios Spyridon is the biggest, busiest and best-known beach in Palaiokastritsa, and for good reason. Nestled in a natural harbour sheltered by rocky cliffs to each side, its golden crescent beach and azure waters make it one of Corfu’s most picture-perfect spots. The water is usually cool and calm and if you’re not satisfied by sunbathing and gentle swimming, speed boats, canoes and sailboats are available, but you can also join an organised boat tour to the famous Palaiokastritsa caves and stop off at secluded beaches inaccessible by land.
History fans will certainly want to investigate the aforementioned monastery, which you’ll find at the top of the hill on the right-hand side of the main beach. The views are spectacular, and the museum houses many marvellous artefacts from the Byzantine era.
Corfu Aquarium is reasonably close too and here you can get up close and personal with local sea life as well as 25 different species of weird and wonderful international reptiles.
Interesting property options often pop up in the listings for Palaiokastritsa. For example, you might choose a cliffside accommodation complex in close proximity to the beach and develop it to meet the demands of the contemporary tourist, or alternatively, if you’re searching for the perfect retirement property, you’ll often find well-appointed apartments here that have all the mod cons and are in easy reach of shops and beaches.
However, if you’re an ambitious investor keen to build a property that meets your needs perfectly, you can also purchase superb land plots here with unparalleled ocean views.
