Agios Georgios

Description

Agios Georgios, also called Agios Georgios North or Agios Georgios Pagon (due to its proximity to the nearby village of Pagi) to be differentiated from the namesake Agios Georgios South beach, is an attractive seaside resort on the mouth of a lush valley on the northwest side of Corfu. It lies some 30km from Corfu Town.

Agios Georgios is a Blue Flag awarded beach and, unquestionably, one of the island’s most beautiful. Located along the horseshoe-shaped Agios Georgios Bay, it stretches for kilometers.

Its turquoise waters and golden sand, in combination with its quietness, make it a preferred destination for families and people who seek a relaxed, tranquil holiday. All modern amenities are present, and there are umbrellas and sunbeds for rent. However, besides sunbathing and swimming, there are all sorts of fun water-based activities: scuba diving (lessons can be arranged), jet ski, windsurf, water ski, SUP, and much more. You can also rent a boat and visit the nearby Porto Timoni or the Diapontia Islands.

Agios Georgios Pagon is a fully developed resort with many accommodation and dining options on the beach and in the settlement.

Agios Georgios Nearby Beaches

Porto Timoni

Porto Timoni is a very famous twin beach of stunning natural beauty. Essentially, it consists of two small beaches separated by a narrow strip of lush land. The one on the left is called Limni and has turquoise waters. Porto Timoni on the right is darker.

Porto Timoni is an excellent challenge for those feeling adventurous. Its location makes it only accessible via narrow paths descending from the village of Afionas or by boat from Agios Georgios. As it is a non-organized beach, inaccessible by car, it has managed to preserve its unspoiled, primitive charm.

Arillas

Arillas is a renowned coastal settlement to the north of Agios Georgios, with a fantastic beach that attracts many domestic and foreign visitors during the summer months.

The beach is sandy, and it has crystal clear shallow waters. Therefore, it is a popular destination for families with small children. Its westward orientation offers unforgettable nightfalls, with the sun diving into the Ionian Sea behind the desolate islands of Sykia, Gynaika, and Gravia (which are just opposite to the beach).

Arillas is a fully organized resort, with many restaurants along the coast serving different cuisine types. There are supermarkets, tourist shops, and all kinds of accommodation options, such as studios, apartments, and hotels.

Things to do and see in the area of Agios Georgios, Corfu

Angelokastro Castle

Angelokastro is one of the important fortresses of Byzantine origin in Greece, standing at the same point since the 7th century.

Built 305m above the sea, at the highest point of Corfu’s western coastline near Paleokastritsa, it overlooks large parts of the island. Due to its location, it was a significant vantage point for protecting the island against attacks.

Angelokastro came to prominence during the Venetian rule (1386-1797). When the Ottomans sieged the island on three occasions (1537, 1571, and 1716), the castle played an instrumental role in repulsing them.

A visit at the premises of Corfu Beer brewery in Arillas

It most certainly is a rhetorical question, but who does not like beer? If your mind instantly replies “Nobody” without giving much thought to it, then you will be delighted to know that Corfu has its own brewery called Corfu Beer.

The premises of Corfu Beer are situated in Arillas, a short drive north of Agios Georgios. Founded in 2006, Corfu Beer uses ultra-modern equipment and is the first brewery to brew real ale in Greece. Going from strength to strength since then, the company now offers a selection of 5 different beers for brewing enthusiasts both in Greece and abroad.

The brewery is open to visitors, so do not miss out on the chance for a guided tour and a fresh beer tasting session.

A walk in the village of Pagi

Pagi, a village 2k from Agios Georgios along the main road to Corfu Town, is a taste of real Corfu. Untouched by the massive tourist flows, Pagi has managed to retain its authenticity and gives a glimpse of how the island’s life used to be in the past.

Stroll around the narrow streets and take in local colors. The village’s people will greet you with a big smile. When you get tired from walking, take a stop at the coffee shops in the center for some refreshment and bask in the ambiance.
